Moving beyond the scientific investigation of optical phenomena, his works open up the dimensions of spiritual experience. The artist has been pursuing this aim since 1974, when he began transforming the Roden Crater\u003cI\u003e—\u003c\/I\u003ean extinct volcano in the \u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:state w:st=\"on\"\u003eArizona\u003c\/st1:state\u003e\u003c\/st1:place\u003e desert—into an observatory. This \u003cI\u003eGanzfeld Piece\u003c\/I\u003e resembles the crater, everted and rotated ninety degrees. Thus the \u003cst1:city w:st=\"on\"\u003eWolfsburg\u003c\/st1:city\u003e installation provides a foretaste of Turrell’s still incomplete, epic work in \u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:state w:st=\"on\"\u003eArizona\u003c\/st1:state\u003e\u003c\/st1:place\u003e.
