The master’s surviving studies count among the most important treasures of the German Renaissance. Max J. Thus it joins the ranks of the scholarly tradition established by earlier volumes of drawings published by the DVfK, which initiated this practice in 1927 with the first complete catalogue of Grünewald’s drawings documented at that time, a book that has long been out of print. Later volumes of drawings featured the work of artists such as Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Schäufelein, and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
