The building was shrouded with an enormous depiction of the American flag in black and white. This was flanked by two drawings: one depicting a claustrophobic mass of Occupy Wall Street protesters; the other, a lone American soldier walking towards an uncertain and ominous future. Architecture is often represented as a product or disembodied object. This view transforms inhabitants into spectators of an architecture that is dematerialized, delocalized, dehumanized and reduced into an image of itself. The collaboration between Mimram and Attali aims for an all-encompassing approach, placing the architecture within its time-frame and physical environment, rather than presenting mere glossy images of the projects. This triple volume builds a new visual vocabulary through which to interpret the structures. The social functionality of public architecture is addressed, largely absent in architectural photography and the communication of built space until now. The first volume focuses on a two-year photographic documentation of the construction of the Airtime building in Paris. The second volume presents an overview of Mimram’s works around the world: bridges, train stations and academic institutions from France to Morocco and China. The third volume focuses on the newly redesigned home to the French Open, Roland-Garros. Carsten Lorenzen (* 1953 in Tønder) has a wealth of experience—ranging from subsidized housing to private complexes, from the conception phase to the execution of details. The use of brick gives his buildings a striking, haptic quality. Working with exposed stonework is an involved process that requires precise planning and an exact knowledge of the stonemason’s craft. A sensitive design of intimate interiors within densely built settlements and subtle transitions between public and private space are other definitive aspects of the architect’s work, which draws its inspiration from Nordic housing and leading figures such as Arne Jacobsen and Kay Fisker. This first monograph presents some 25 projects and ideas that have been planned or constructed since 1996. They address the changing role of art institutions and initiatives in Africa, where the cultural and artistic context is characterized by a predominance of government led art programs and infrastructure. The last decade has witnessed the emergence of a variety of independent art spaces using a wide range of formats to promote art and critical exchange. These initiatives draw a new cartography of artistic action in Africa. This reader looks at the structural and programmatic issues at play within those institutions. Models and profiles of art institutions developed in other regions of the world are also examined. And not only that, but what the eye has recognized as reality up to then turns out to be a laboratory of processes, in which the colors merge, wet on wet, and the paint is dripped, sprayed, wiped with a painting cloth, removed, and thickly daubed. As a triennial, it accompanies one of the largest renaturation projects in the world: the redevelopment of the Emscher. Within the scope of a once-in-a-generation project, the river at the heart of the Ruhr Region will be transformed from an open sewer into an almost entirely natural body of water by 2020. At unusual sites, such as overgrown fallow land or former industrial centers, art forges a new path, proving its merit as an experimental field and a laboratory for the future.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Exhibition schedule: EMSCHERKUNST.2013, Emscher Island, June 22–October 6, 2013

Artists featured (selection): Ai Weiwei, Hans op de Beeck, Daniel Buren, Tue Greenfort, Michael Sailstorfer, Tomás Saraceno, Apolonija Sustersic, Elin Wikström, Anna Witt

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775736244_09230083-3fea-4664-95fa-61ade9145c42.jpg?v=1744058489
17885-elemental
Elemental

What began as an academic initiative to improve the quality of life of poor strata of the population has meanwhile become a professional “do tank” offering services that cover the entire spectrum of urban development. Precise observations of social realities and their contradictions are at the center of his artistic research. With a keen sense for the sociological, the artist explores society’s rejects and internal emptiness. He sheds light on the magical dimensions of loneliness and melancholy, focusing their existential forms and thus working within the tradition of Romantic painting. Although his paintings are based on photographs, he changes them by adding countless, finely glazed layers, or by intensifying colors or exaggerating the composition.
