The Future of the Museum
When museums worldwide had to close in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus, New York-based cultural strategist András Szántó conducted interviews with a number of internationally active museum directors. At a time when economic, political, and cultural changes signal the beginning of a new era, the museum leaders spoke openly about the historical limitations and untapped potential of their institutions. The 28 dialogues in this book each address a specific theme relevant to art institutions today and tomorrow. What emerged from this series of conversations is a composite portrait of a generation of museum directors working to make institutions more open, democratic, inclusive, experimental and experience-oriented, technologically savvy, and culturally polyphonic, aligned with the needs of their visitors and communities, and engaging with the important questions of the societies around them.

INTERLOCUTORS: Marion Ackermann (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden), Cecilia Alemani (The High Line, New York), Anton Belov (Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow), Meriem Berrada (MACAAL, Marrakesh), Daniel Birnbaum (Acute Art, London), Thomas P. Each of the twelve chapters of this book is dedicated to a painting from the collection. The compilation reveals painting as it discovers itself and, in doing so, becomes a medium for expressing modern subjectivity. The paintings discussed here unfold in their artistic questions, which are also our own. In which paradoxes do artworks created by women emerge? How does the ancient urge to destroy artworks influence today's discourse on art? Where did painting's modern struggle against the image begin and how did it manifest itself? Why does the Wild Man from the German Renaissance still haunt us today? Yet today we have moved far away from a self-consuming love for something higher, such as that which drove Nietzsche to madness or the Islamic mystic al-Hallaj to martyrdom. Love for nature, which Adnan depicts based on her own experiences, seems to have even given way to contempt – how else could we explain the ecological catastrophe we are heading towards? The price for stopping it would be too high, for it would be associated with a radical change in our way of life – similar to the most conventional form of love, that between two people, which brings with it an intensity that few are willing to endure.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775728553_3ccdb5d4-82f5-492c-afeb-aae749c61ea7.jpg?v=1744061639
65366-story-of-water-and-fire
Story of Water and Fire
Story of Water and Fire is a compelling account of the shared lives of two central figures in the Iraqi art scene, poet and art critic May Muzaffar and artist Rafa Nasiri. Each of the twelve chapters in this book is dedicated to a painting from the collection. In their entirety, they reveal a kind of painting that discovers itself and thereby becomes a medium for expressing modern subjectivity. The paintings discussed here unfold in their artistic questions, which are also our own. In what paradoxes are artworks created by women? How does the ancient urge to destroy artworks influence today's discourse on art? Where did painting's modern struggle against the image begin and how did it manifest itself? Why does the Wild Man from the German Renaissance still haunt us today? And why is it unimportant to know whether Jan Vermeer used an optical device when painting or not? "Twelve Pictures" is an ode to the topicality of the Old Masters.

This book is also available in German.

TAL STERNGAST (*1972, Israel) studied photography and film in Jerusalem, London, and Berlin. Particularly in his paintings of the empty ocean, created from 1846 onwards, the Danish artist developed the seascape into a mirror of the soul, of the longings and ambitions of his time. For the first time in art history without signs of human, ship or coast, the agitated sea surface of his marine solitudes, in its uniformity, impenetrability and spatial infinity, aims at the unsettling of the viewers and becomes a projection surface for existential reflection. With 30 short, manifesto-like texts – building blocks for a new architecture – Spatializing Justice is a practical handbook for addressing social and economic exclusion in urban spaces and calls for the development of concepts ranging from the redefinition of urban infrastructure to the revitalization of generic single-family home developments in the suburbs. These building blocks require an expanded practice that enables architects to give spatial form to new ways of living together. Consciously questioning existing exclusionary practices can foster experimental approaches beyond formal parameters – architects should see themselves not only as designers of things, but of social processes that question ownership and property and open up new fields of research and sites for intervention. The impressions from her life between Lebanon, France, and California, as well as her travels to Mexico and North Africa, are reflected in an impressive openness to different art forms and languages—both literary and visual. At the same time, war, exile, and colonial experiences shaped her: as a result of the Algerian War of Independence, she refused to continue writing in French out of solidarity with Algeria—she began to paint, using the poetry of vibrant colors as a universal language. In parallel, Adnan discovered the leporello: the world between the book covers unfolds into meter-long, densely woven tapestries of poetry and painting, calligraphy, and drawing.
This catalog, published alongside the first major exhibition in Saudi Arabia, opens new perspectives on Adnan's moving biography and brings together a large number of works from all creative phases, highlighting the richness and diversity of Adnan's oeuvre.

ETEL ADNAN's (1925–2021) highly acclaimed work is characterized by an engaged and open-minded engagement with the world. She studied philosophy in Beirut, Paris, and from 1955 in Berkeley and Harvard. From 1958–72, she taught in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she began to paint, inspired by a deeply felt connection to nature. In 1972, Adnan returned to Beirut as a cultural editor.
