From Rembrandt’s mother studying the Bible, to Edvard Munch asleep next to a brothel madam reading a book after a bacchanal, to Picasso, who was never seen holding a book, this charming little volume offers up a fascinating spectrum of paintings from all epochs and genres. They all have one thing in common: whether conspicuously in the middle, or hidden on the edge, each of these paintings features one or more books. A book in a painting is not only a bridge between literature and the visual arts, it also elucidates content, references, and relationships in the paintings, shedding light on their background and providing insight into the painter’s attitude. In this way, books and paintings have carried on an entertaining dialogue between text and image throughout the history of culture.

Jamie Camplin studied art history at Cambridge and for many years was the program director for Thames & Hudson publishers. The Danish designer Verner Panton (1926-1998) redesigned the building, assigning a bright color to each floor. His three-dimensional installation and its psychedelic effects were precisely in step with the times. Unfortunately, later generations of journalists felt differently about it, and so Panton’s interiors were gradually removed, bit by bit. Only the cafeteria remained in all its original splendor; a citizen’s group succeeded in having it placed under the protection of the historical preservation registry, and as of 2012, it can now be seen at the Hamburg Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. There, however, only the orange-colored dining hall has been reconstructed; the red one and the violet one are now in the depository, along with the snack bar. This publication documents the cheerfully colorful ensemble of furniture, lamps, curtains, wallpaper, and ceiling—a unique and total work of art.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775733212_213b0e42-0a84-4bcd-9eb5-0ac0b9357945.jpg?v=1744144270
