Based on the concept by Ciprian Adrian Barsan, this project takes viewers on a metaphysical journey between decay and re-creation. Approximately a quarter of Schiele's works, which address themes such as death, sexuality, and melancholy, now exist only as black-and-white shadow images. Adrian Ghenie, one of the most important contemporary artists, transforms these lost images into vibrant, color-intensive artworks. His masterful ability to blur the lines between reality and abstraction creates an impressive homage to Schiele's legacy. His legendary painting "The Scream" even served as the basis for a popular emoji. In a unique way, the Norwegian understood how to put himself as an individual in the foreground and make his psychological state the subject of his work. In doing so, Munch created a personal yet universal "diary of the soul" that continues to captivate us today. In 26 short chapters, from A for Anxiety to G for Ghosts, R for Revolver, and all the way to Z for Zoo, well-known but also surprising aspects of his art and life are presented in an entertaining way.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944), as a painter and printmaker, made feelings and states of mind the subject of his work. In intense colors and a form somewhere between abstraction and figuration, he created a highly individual artistic language that makes his work as enigmatic as it is appealing to this day. Born in Norway, his travels took him to Paris and Berlin, where he cultivated contacts with important writers, artists, and intellectuals of the time. He spent the end of his life in seclusion in Oslo, where he died in 1944.

The art historian Ulf Küster (*1966, Stuttgart) has been working at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel since 2004. Her figural depictions oscillate between the idealization of form and its deconstruction. Saville draws inspiration from art history – from old masters like Leonardo and Raphael to Egon Schiele, Picasso, Francis Bacon, and Lucian Freud – for a style of painting characterized by physicality, fleshiness, and the interplay of new and old techniques. Whether she depicts history, the bodies of others, or herself, her work is always distinguished by its transcendence of conventional notions of beauty and ugliness.

As a member of the Young British Artists (YBAs), Jenny Saville (b. 1970, Cambridge) revitalized contemporary figurative painting: oscillating between figuration and abstraction, she addresses the representation and perception of the body.
Hilma af Klint. Less known are her artistic beginnings, which were dedicated to an intensive study of nature. In the spring and summer months of 1919 and 1920, when she was already creating her now celebrated abstract paintings, she drew flowers almost every day: "I will try to capture the flowers of the earth," she noted. The recently discovered portfolio of 46 large-format watercolors, presented here as a facsimile edition, shows the uniquely individual approach of the exceptional Swedish artist: the pulsating power of nature stands alongside precisely drawn diagrams. Realism and fiction, close-up and vision converge. In the interplay of organic forms and abstract structures, the portfolio thus points to the overarching spiritual, cosmological dimension of Hilma af Klint's work.

Hilma af Klint (1862, Solna–1944, Danderyd) studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.
