Today, Danish furniture, textiles, and home appliances and utensils from the sixties and seventies are more popular than ever. The beautiful pieces are meanwhile for sale at design galleries and have become a rarity at flea markets. In short, Nordic items for everyday use have become internationally sought-after trophies for sophisticates. This publication provides an extensive overview of those everyday objects that have to this day written design history both in Denmark as well as worldwide. Along with thirty-two leading scholars and journalists, the head of the library and research at the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, Lars Dybdahl, advances into the fascinating history of the individual objects. And this, even though the delicate aesthetic sensibilities, the sense of color, and the eye for composition required to decorate private rooms have more direct influence on our lives than any work of art in any museum could lay claim to. This richly illustrated volume is dedicated to one of the pioneering German masters of this craft: Peter Gustaf Dorén. Every design fan has his or her favorite from among Wegner’s approximately five hundred creations. Today, there is a hardly a glossy interior design magazine that does not include an illustration of the elegant China Chair (1943) or the Y Chair (1950), and even John F. Kennedy sat on his Round Chair, which is now simply called The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner usually made his prototypes himself by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process he pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unmatched elegance. This book features photographic representations of the architect's work and private spaces as a tribute, a hymn of admiration. While staying in his private home, the photographers allowed themselves to be enchanted, approaching the elements with an anti-critical attitude. They compared their own bodies to his, sat on his chairs, opened his cupboards, listened to the silence, and kissed in the enchanted garden. The house was portrayed by day, moon, and street light, during thunderstorms, with flash photography, and by rubbing the walls and floors with aluminum sheets to reveal its history through its textures.

Francisca Rivero-Lake Cortina (b. 1973) and Carla Verea Hernández (b. 1978) have been collaborating as photographers since 2005 and live in Mexico City. With their extraordinary and investigative gaze, they mark an important position in contemporary photography. In Europe, they became known with their exhibition Paparazza Moderna at the Vitra Design Museum in 2019.
In early 1930s Berlin, Otti Berger, as a female solo entrepreneur, created fabrics that fundamentally changed the understanding of what textiles could be and achieve. For her upholstery designs, curtains, wall coverings, and floor coverings, she worked closely with New Building architects such as Lilly Reich, Ludwig Hilberseimer, and Hans Scharoun. She designed for novel functional demands, thereby redefining the interplay of aesthetics and function – with fascinating results that are still aesthetically and functionally convincing today. Berger's textile work has so far been little researched; the artist Judith Raum succeeds here for the first time in comprehensively presenting the complexity and beauty of her fabrics and bringing them back to life.

Image credits © Uta Neumann © Florian De Brün

OTTI BERGER (1898 – 1944) was one of the most important textile designers of the 20th century. Born in Zmajevac, in what was then the Hungarian Kingdom of Croatia, she studied from 1921 – 1926 in Zagreb, and from 1927 at the Bauhaus in Dessau. After teaching at the Bauhaus, she became self-employed in Berlin in 1932 and designed fabric collections for modern interiors throughout Europe. In 1936, as a Jew, she was banned from her profession; attempts to flee to England and the USA failed. In 1944, she was deported from Croatia to Auschwitz and murdered there.

The visual artist and art historian JUDITH RAUM (*1977), as a result of several research projects on the Bauhaus weaving workshop, is a specialist in Otti Berger's work. This book concludes her multi-year cooperative project with the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, for which she has for the first time comprehensively researched Berger's estate, which is scattered across archives worldwide.
