On September 5, Under the auspices of the Elfie Semotan Contradiction exhibition, the artist will be in conversation with Jina Khayyer on the evolution and development of her work and her life

Elfie Semotan’s career began in front of the camera in the 1960s. As a fashion model, she was both object and subject, and these experiences honed her photographic vision. She approaches her topics and subjects with respect and her images express her moral elegance. Semotan’s photographs of prominent individuals in art, film, music, and fashion—including the artists Maria Lassnig and Louise Bourgeois as well as the Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek—epitomize her unmistakable talent for the attentiveness she brings to her portraits of women and men, revealing them as decisive and confident yet also vulnerable, shy, tender, and full of contradictions and flaws. Naturally, Semotan’s life experiences as a woman have also shaped her perspective. The photographer imbues her images with an unusual intimacy and liveliness even when she is photographing objects, as in her more recent still lifes and landscapes.
