The Australian artist Dennis Del Favero is producing Cross Currents as an interactive installation and work for CD-ROM in the course of his artist-in-residency at ZKM. It forms the third part of a trilogy investigating the new traffic (and sex trade, especially) in humans sweeping Europe and exploiting, amongst other victims, refugees from Former Yugoslavia. These refugees, lured by fake advertisements and enticements, find themselves forced to work as prostitutes in the hotels and streets of Berlin and other European cities. In surveying this underground sexual economy the project also reveals a specific interrelationship between male and female sexuality. This intertwining exposes the secret debt paid extracted from the bodies of the women involved and the brutalization enacted on the emotional lives of the men. The project focuses on these issues through a narrative dealing with the relationship between a young mail-order bride from former Yugoslavia and her husband, who sells her into prostitution in Berlin. The artist: Australian-born Dennis Del Favero began exhibiting in the mid- 1980s; since then his photographs, videos and installations have been shown in Australia, Europe, Scandinavia, Canada and Israel. The interrelated themes of masculinity and violence recur through much of Del Favero's work.
