On every day of their stay in Beijing, Christine de la Garenne and Via Lewandowsky took a photograph that seemed to them especially descriptive of the foreign culture they saw themselves confronted with. "Neobiota" presents 120 of these atmospherically condensed images in an unusual artist's book.

In the context of their four-month Neobiota project, video artist Christine de la Garenne (* 1973 in Karlsruhe) and installation artist Via Lewandowsky (* 1963 in Dresden) observed themselves and everyday life in Beijing with a special eye for the Other. The result is this collection of 120 photographs—poetic snapshots of a society in translation that also reflect the photographers’ own process of adaptation to a foreign culture. Ironic quips, critical comments, and humorous asides by the artists accompany the images. Cultural investigation and archiving, artistic and research-based exploration, West and East all come together in this unusual art and artists’ book. Exhibition schedule: ZKM Karlsruhe, September 2006 · Städtische Galerie, Wolfsburg, January 14–April 29, 2007
