One of the Grand Old Dames of modern art presents a selection of her works: Carol Rama, who was awarded the Golden Lion for her lifework at the Venice Biennale in 2003.

The Italian artist Carol Rama, born 1918 in Turin, is one of the most striking artistic personalities of her generation. Since the 1930s, Rama, now eighty-six years old, has been exploring the darkest aspects of sexuality and danger in delicately painted images. Her early surreal, erotic paintings show torsos of mutilated women besieged by symbols of masculinity. The "Appassionata" appears as an auratic figure of suffering, helplessly exposed in a sickbed or wheelchair. Everyday objects such as high-heel shoes, shaving brushes, and false teeth assume the quality of fetishes in their isolation. After World War II, Carol Rama turned her attention to Arte Concreta. She also integrated poems by her lifelong friend Edoardo Sanguineti into her delicate material constructions composed of bicycle inner tubes, glass eyes, animal claws, and other such elements. She returned to sexual themes again in the early 1980s. This book presents a cross-section of Carol Rama's life's work, for which she was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in the summer of 2003.
