A rich selection from the multifaceted oeuvre of Caro Niederer, which extends from brilliantly colored photos of typical holiday motifs to painted interpretations of postcard images in sepia tones.

Caro Niederer, born in Zurich in 1963, is one of the most exciting painters of her generation. She first gained attention with small, vividly colored, figurative oil paintings done from postcards. Since 1994, the artist has produced a series of photographs of interiors documenting the context in which her works were hung by their purchasers. Using her own source materials, such as an adaptation of Ingres's Baigneuse de Valpinçon of 1808, she had tapestries made in China; her large photograph of the room in which they now hang inundates the viewer with virtual cascades of meaning. Caro Niederer turned to larger formats in 1997, largely eliminating color from her painting, and creating works in deep tones of sepia. Her most recent series of works features soft-focus color photos of idyllic holiday settings - from seashore and mountain scenes to exotic pagoda motifs. Exhibition schedule: Kunstverein St. Gallen Kunstmuseum, December 10, 2004 - February 13, 2005 · Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, April 9 - June 5, 2005 · Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld 2006
