After the collapse of communist domination in 1989, East Europe was inundated by a wave of euphoria. Capitalism and democracy made an entrance, accompanied by great hopes and even greater disappointments. The "Magnum" photographer Carl De Keyzer spent two years travelling through all East European countries to document trends of the times, emotions and the living situations of people in his book with the evocative title "East of Eden". Vividly expressive black and white photos of everyday life East European cities and provincial towns are interpreted with thoughts of prominent writers and philosophers. In perceptive documentary pictures, Carl de Keyzer juxtaposes the dreams of the "Western" paradise with the hard realities of the period of upheaval and never loses his sense of human perspective in the process. The artist: Carl de Keyzer *1958 in Kortryk. Member of "Magnum" since 1994. Free-lance photographer since 1982. Professor for photography in Gent.
