This third volume of monographs on the work of Behnisch published by Gerd Hatje covers the most recent works of this architectural firm, and, in addition to a selection of projects, it documents a several buildings realised from 1987 to 1997 in carefully reproduced duplex illustrations with short texts by Günter Behnisch. The steady development of the architecture of Behnisch & Partner becomes lucid in the chronology of this book. The repertory of liberally designed buildings like the library in Eichstätt (1987) and the design for the Filmpalast in Munich (1991) become formally toned down in more recent projects like the designs for the central state bank in Munich (1992) and the service centre for the county savings bank in Stuttgart (under construction). This tendency moves back to the beginnings of Behnisch & Partner: A clear, objective language determines the fragile charm. Always ready to put its own architecture up to question from time to time, the firm preserves its candour in the face of an ever-changing world.
