With his thoroughly meditative photography marked by a sense of quiet and spirituality, the Korean artist Bae, Bien-U is one of the leading contemporary photographers in his country. His photographs of the pine forests and royal shrine of the Shilla dynasty in Gyeongju—some of which seem to have been inked in with a calligraphy quill—have also secured him an outstanding position on the international photography scene. His new series, Windscapes, is devoted to landscapes in motion. The Korean word for “landscape” (which is also the same in China and Japan) is made up of the characters for “wind” and “scene.” It is closely tied to the traditional, cosmological notion of the ether, a quintessence that permeates all living things.

In our first Collector’s Edition from this series, mighty rocks lie in the ocean surf, enveloped in spray, fading here and there, while some seem to sink completely into the gentle mist. The fog reduces the view of the sea to an almost black-and-white scene.

Our second edition seems almost like a graphic print—a hilly landscape in strong contrasts of light and shadow; the curved lines of mountain crests are staggered out to the horizon and then lost in a high, hazy sky.

After our earlier Collector’s Edition, with its popular photographs of pine trees, quickly sold out, we are now pleased to be able to offer you these lovely new editions of gelatin silver prints on high-quality photo paper, framed in oak.

A gelatin silver print is a high-quality black-and-white print made with an emulsion of silver halide and gelatin; they are distinguished by their faithful reproduction of detail, as well as their brilliance and durability.
