Artur Zmijewski
Artur Zmijewski (*1966, Warsaw) first attracted the attention of the international public with his video piece entitled Singing Lessons 1, which he showed at Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt/Main. In Singing Lesson 1 a group of deaf youth "sing" the Kyrie from a mass by Jan Maklakiewicz. The result is a gripping document of an attempt to achieve the impossible, a study of the possibilities and limitations of perception. Zmijewski includes the mentally and physically disabled in other works as well, to hint at the expressive and discursive potential their apparent deficiencies contain. In An Eye for an Eye (1998), he made amputees seem able to walk or grasp again with the aid of limbs "borrowed" from another person. This monograph presents Zmijewski's work for the Polish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2005 and includes a complete catalogue of his previous works along with a number of informative essays.
