For the first time in print: André Breton's Dosier Dada, a unique historical source on Dada in Paris.

To the Dadaists, a successful provocation had little meaning; it was the indignant commentary in the papers that really consummated a Dada evening. Some of the legendary Dada events even occurred exclusively in newspapers, which trustingly printed the Dadaists' invented stories. The reactions of the press thus became an integral part of Dadaist actions. The unpublished Dossier Dada by André Breton (1896-1966), a central figure in the Dada movement in Paris and later the driving force behind the Surrealists, is a prime example of this. The album, measuring approximately 32 by 38 centimeters and about 20 centimeters thick, is the largest-ever Dada collage. In it, Breton pasted all of the newspaper and magazine articles printed between 1916 and 1924 in which he was mentioned, as well as all of his original documents such as invitations, posters, or letters that had to do with the activities commented on by the press. This book features about eighty pages selected from the album, offering a practically complete chronicle of the publications and provocations offered by the Dadaists in Paris. Exhibition schedule: Kunsthaus Zürich, December 9, 2005-February 19, 2006 · Dada exhibitions in the Centre Pompidou, Paris, October 5, 2005-January 9, 2006 · National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., February 19-May 14, 2006
