The unparalleled collection of F. C. Gundlach presently on permanent loan to the Internationales Haus der Photographie at the Hamburg Deichtorhallen comprises no less than 12,000 works of classical, documentary, and fashion photography as well as numerous photographic works by visual artists. This catalog presents works from the Gundlach collection selected by Zdenek Felix, Director of the Deichtorhallen for many years. Fifty-six artists are represented with a large number of works focused primarily on the human image. In addition to photos by Erwin Blumenfeld, Irving Penn, Robert Frank, Harry Callahan, Lisette Model, and Otto Steinert, the book also features works by lesser-known artists. Special emphasis is given to photographers from Eastern Europe, among them Josef Koudelka, Antanas Sutkus, and Evgenij Mochorev. Another section is devoted to works by such visual artists as Cindy Sherman, Fischli/Weiss, Günther Förg, Jenny Holzer, and Wolfgang Tillmans, who have worked either predominantly or selectively in the medium of photography. Exhibition schedule: Deichtorhallen Hamburg, October 29, 2003 - January 25, 2004
