The classic still life photo genre is challenged in the Edition Gerd Hatje: the leftovers of a luxurious dinner are rendered as Baroque still lifes, plants turn out to be artificial reconstructions, and arrangements of everyday objects become artful, associative tableaux.

We are offering a 10% discount on selected editions up until October 15, 2018.*

In his brilliant color photos, the ad-man and director Ralf Schmerberg features usual/unusual subjects with a great aesthetic allure. The edition comprises two photographs of the leftovers of an elegant evening meal.

Marrigje de Maar shows us the homey, old-fashioned character of Chinese households and their cultural diversity, making it possible to perceive the beauty and value of the simplest things. The exquisite color of her photos recalls Netherlandish paintings of the Golden Age.

What is still real in our world today, and what is merely fakery? In his black-and-white series The Alphabet of New Plants Robert Voit continues his photographic analyses of the trompe l’oeil: it is only upon closer inspection that the viewer becomes aware that these are the kind of artificial blossoms mass-manufactured for decorative purposes. For months, Erik Niedling studied historical glass negatives of photos of plants and gardening tools, ultimately transforming a small selection of them into new, mostly large-format prints. Tradition is repeated, but a subtle arrangement changes the reconstruction into deconstruction.

For his photographic still lifes Thorsten Brinkmann makes use of a gigantic trash trove to create spaces out of surprising combinations of discarded materials and playful art historical references for viewers to reconceive, rethink, and reflect upon.

In Jose Dávila’s work, material plays a central role, and so here it is presented with a very specific focus: his sculptures are a powerful interplay of fragility and strength, balance and counter-balance. Featuring details from his sculptures, the three pictures show his treatment of materials and contrasts.
