Along with the “New Leipzig School” and the “Dresden Pop” movement, the highly individual work of Peter Zimmermann plays an important role in contemporary German art.

Since the late eighties, Cologne-based artist Peter Zimmermann (*1956 in Freiburg), renowned the world over due to numerous international exhibitions, has been working on an art form which examines the terms and possibilities of contemporary visual depiction. In Book Cover Paintings, he transposes the covers of art books into his works, thereby demonstrating his own art-historical context, and presents this conceptual art, a kind of painting about painting, with seductive sensuality. In the flowing forms of his Blob Paintings, however, Zimmermann explores the expanding role of the media in painting. Using a computer, he distorts photographs into a digitalized abstraction, and then transfers them onto canvas.Exhibition schedule: Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris, 6 January–February 2007 · The Happy Lion Gallery, Los Angeles, March 2007Peter Zimmermann (*1956 in Freiburg, Germany) lives and works in Cologne.Studied from 1978 to 1983 at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart.
