| The Vienna Philharmonic celebrates its 175th anniversary: where the beautiful sounds are

Nives Widauer (*1965 in Basel) works in a variety of different media. Besides photographs and films, her portfolio also includes paintings, sculptures, and installations for the stages of theaters and opera houses. During the Lucerne Festival in 2011, the Swiss artist discovered her enthusiasm for the instrument cases of the Vienna Philharmonic, which was rehearsing in the Culture and Congress Center at Lake Lucerne. Widauer was fascinated by the arrangement of the musicians’ cases, bags, clothes, and shoes that accompany the orchestra on its tours throughout the world. Her photographs present the life of the objects that dress the famous orchestra beyond concert appearances and protect the precious instruments. At the same time, during the tours the objects repeatedly seek new, temporary shelter—hidden in the interior of the architectural concert-hall jewels invisible to the public.
