Nightscapes
From very early on, photographers have tried to catch the special atmosphere of the night. The figure of the lonesome evening stroller was celebrated especially at the beginning of the 20th century, along with the 'dark side' of the big city and the new electric billboards. Today, almost a whole century later, cities at night tend to be less picturesque at first sight while the technical possibilities of photography are more advanced. And yet, the special charm of putting everyday architecture and landscapes quite literally into another light still works. This book features shots from nine contemporary photographers, exclusively taken at night: the American Byrd Williams, for instance, sees himself in the tradition of the stroller, his triptychs show street scenes of deserted night-time big cities; Frank Darius uses long exposure times which make his pictures look as if they were taken in daylight; in Dirk Königsfeld's photographs, on the other hand, day lighting makes the reality appear as a backdrop.
