In spring 2009 one of the highlights of recent contemporary architecture—the new building for the Udo and Anette Brandhorst Collection in Munich’s museum complex—will be dedicated. More than seven hundred works of modern and contemporary art are being entrusted to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen.This impressive museum, designed by internationally renownedBerlin architects Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton, is located on an extremely narrow piece of land, very close to the Pinakothek der Moderne. 36,000 glazed ceramic bars in 23 different colors give the building an inimitable appearance, an urbane image of enormous concision, and an incomparable signal effect. The building’s interior is reserved, so that prominence is given to the art, yet its well-proportioned rooms are impressively attractive.
