It was not until the early twentieth century that the first reports on the culture and architecture of the Dogon people in western Africa reached Europe. The Dogon live on the highlands of Mali, on either side of the Bandigara Escarpment, which is over one hundred miles long. Members of this ethnic group built adobe dwellings, granaries, ritual sites, and assembly rooms that are strikingly sculptural and set into steep, hard-to-reach cliffs or located on the high plateau. Listed since 1989 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this centuries-old, traditional regional architecture is at the same time singularly functional, economical, ecological, aesthetic, and well-adapted to the climate.This standard work on the adobe architecture and art of the Dogon is supported by years of research, and the new edition has been completely revised.
