Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) drew throughout his entire artistic career. He was continually fascinated by the many different forms of expression afforded by drawing and watercolors. And so, aside from his paintings, he created thousands of drawings, whose significance caught the attention of collector Willy Hahn very early on. Kokoschka was especially interested in the spontaneity that drawing allowed, as well as the creativity of the moment that it was capable of expressing. Approximately ninety drawings from the collection form the basis for this publication, which presents outstanding examples of Kokoschka drawings from the Vienna and Dresden years to the late works of the 1970s. They range from his famous portraits of women and girls, to the self-portraits and the landscape drawings. Exhibition schedule: Kupferstich-Kabinett, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, July 9–October 3, 2011 | Rupertinum, Salzburg, opening autumn 2011
