| Hermine Overbeck-Rohte’s oeuvre from an art-historical and sociological perspective

“Your woman, your friend, your colleague, your everything” is how Hermine Rohte (1869–1937) characterized herself to her fiancé, the well-known Worpswede artist Fritz Overbeck. By defining herself as more than just his future wife, she far exceeds the turn-of-the-century gender norms. However, the painter had to walk a fine line, balancing her household duties with her work as an artist. Even though she worked largely in obscurity, she leaves behind an array of paintings that are as much in the spirit of the times as the work of her successful husband. The immediacy of her multifaceted Worpswede landscapes, her Impressionist-style motifs from the area around Bremen, and her sculpturally wrought still lifes allow the viewer to intuitively approach Overbeck-Rohte’s oeuvre, one certainly worth exploring. Exhibition schedule: Overbeck-Museum, Bremen, May 29–September 25, 2011
