Gunda Förster, the first recipient of the H. W. & J. Hector Art Prize awarded by the Kunsthalle Mannheim, works with pure light in her installations-with color and light in the medium of video and with light and images in her painterly photographs. Viewers of her installations enter spaces in which they encounter compositions of light and sound which take them to the limits of sensory experience on the verge of physical violence. Förster explores the boundaries of recognition in her photographs of images from television screens that call to mind x-ray pictures of internal organs of the body. In her videos, she works with different aspects of everyday perception. Her most recent works are present strange reanimations derived from moving film images. This publication, the first survey of the artist's work over the past ten years, is accompanied by a DVD featuring video documentations of specific works. The artist: Gunda Förster, born in 1967 in Berlin. 1991-1997: studied at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. Numerous awards and grants, including the 1st German Art Prize; a DAAD grant for study in the U.S.; the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff grant; the 2003 H. W. & J. Hector Art Prize, Mannheim.
