| An examination of three important areas of George Grosz’s oeuvre: drawings, watercolors, and collages

After the end of World War I, George Grosz (1893–1959) counted among the leading representatives of the Dada movement. His biting satires had an enormous impact on the visual culture of the Weimar Republic. This publication presents a first-class selection of Grosz’s drawings, watercolors, and collages, produced over the course of five decades. It includes never-before-seen and unpublished works, such as a recently discovered preliminary study for the major missing work that lends its name to the title of this book, and its array of themes spans the breadth of his artistic career. These address his examination of the political events of his time; his vehement criticism of the middle class, the church, and the military; and his fascination with the libidinal facets of human beings and the metropolises of New York and Berlin. Exhibition schedule: Max Ernst Museum des LVR Brühl, September 11–December 18, 2011 | Stiftung Ahlers Pro Arte / Kestner Pro Arte, Hannover, February—May 2012
