Das Sechstagespiel des Orgien Mysterien Theaters. Prinzendorf 3.-9. August 1998
Hermann Nitsch (* 1938 in Vienna) lives and works in Prinzendorf.
1957: conceived the idea of the "Orgies-Mysteries Theater," a six-day theater festival to which he continues to devote much of his energy today; 1960-66: actions and exhibitions in Vienna resulting in several trials on criminal charges and three prison sentences; other actions in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Naples, Milan, Rome, Zurich, New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Prinzendorf; 1989 to present: instructor at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Frankfurt. 1995: stage designer and co-director of the production of Jules Massenet's opera Hérodiade at the Vienna State Opera; continuous work on the Orgies-Mysteries Theater project; expansion of the painting and theatrical concept to include architectural and musical elements.
Hermann Nitsch, one of Austria's best-known contemporary artists, a pioneer of Vienna Actionism whose work is shown at many important museums all over the world, has regularly generated heated controversy with his works. His typical splatter paintings - large, evocative canvases splattered and splotched with colors - are the model for this work.
For this Collector's Edition, Nitsch produced original etchings, all of which are one-of-a-kinds, printed on a hand press by Kurt Zein of Vienna using five to six plates on paper which was hand-painted by the artist.
