GDR - Stories from A Country Which is No More

MCK Krakow presents 170 photographs of the East Berlin Ostkreuz agency

An unusual chronicle of life in the German Democratic Republic – the no longer existing country created on October 7, 1949, in the Soviet Occupation Zone and functioning until the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
The 170 black and white photographs show the drab reality of East Germany, captured with a hint of irony. Their authors are accomplished photographers connected with the prestigious Ostkreuz agency – Sibylle Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Maurice Weiss. They recorded reality in ways far removed from the brief of the socialist propaganda. Even on photographs of official political and social events they were able to unmask the whole absurdity and hypocrisy of the system.
