The trained stone sculptor Kilian Rüthemann (*1979 in Bütschwil, Switzerland) examines the various spatial and architectural features of exhibition spaces in his works. By means of nominal site-specific interventions, he seizes an existing situation and exposes the essence of the materials he employs. He belongs to a generation of young artists who are again devoting themselves to formal and aesthetic issues in sculpture yet are at the same time interested in processes of transformation and dissolution instead of stasis and permanence. Rüthemann is primarily concerned with instability and alterability, with construction und decay—both in his works as well as in the architecture of the exhibition venue. This first comprehensive publication on the artist comments on his work from a variety perspectives.

Exhibition schedule: Kunstmuseum Basel, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, March 24– May 24, 2010
