Reality Bites explores the specific nature of art made in the new Germany, which has evolved since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. It inquires how the visual arts have directly and indirectly dealt with the effects of unification, bringing into focus the interdependency between art and the social, economic, and political worlds.
With essays by Diedrich Diederichsen, Sabine Eckmann, Beate Kemfert, Gertrud Koch, Lutz Koepnick, and Iain Boyd Whyte, this volume features approximately 70 works of art from different genres. These paintings, photographs, objects, installations, films, and new media pieces demonstrate the new reciprocal relationship of everyday aesthetics and art. Reality Bites focuses on this aesthetic fusion which is characteristic of the new avant-garde in post-Wall Germany.
