Since 1936, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has set the standard for corporate design practice, producing some of the most iconic modern buildings of the century and shaping cities throughout the world. The SOM journal, a new, small-format publication edited by Wilfried Wang, takes stock of the firm's most recent work in progress and brings SOM's current design research to light. Contributors include renowned artist Jenny Holzer, Ove/Arup & Partners engineer Cecil Balmond, the architectural critic and historian Kenneth Frampton of Columbia University, and architect Jesse Reiser of Reiser+Umemoto, an up-and-coming architecture firm based in New York. The amply illustrated volume, designed by Dutch graphic designers Studio COMA, frames a critical look at five current projects and includes an interview by architectural historian and theorist Detlef Mertins with the retired SOM partner Walter Netsch, designer of the United States Air Force Academy, the subject of much attention in recent architectural discourse.
