The strange beauty of Claudia Fährenkemper's microphotographs is both captivating and disturbing at once. Beetles' heads, plant seeds, and crystals-images from a world that is invisible to the naked eye open a door to an entirely new realm of visual experience. Fährenkemper's documentary, conceptual approach, which reflects the influence of her mentors Bernd and Hilla Becher, and her "magical realism" embody the photographic tradition of New Objectivity. Her real interest is not the object itself but its precise visual reproduction. The heightened, almost tactile presence of the surface texture achieved with the aid of a scanning electron microscope enables the viewer to experience the sensual qualities of organic or inorganic worlds and the sculptural dimensions of abstract pictorial spaces. This large-format edition containing articles by Ludger Derenthal, Director of the Museum für Fotografie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and Ann Thomas, Curator of Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, is the first published presentation of Claudia Fährenkemper's "photo-sculpture." Positioned at the boundary between aesthetics and science, Fährenkemper's art offers a fascinating new perspective on our contemporary world.
