Lovely news from Paris: In the category Photobook of the Year at the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards 2016, the Juror’s Special Mention goes to Taking Stock of Power. An Other View of the Berlin Wall by Arwed Messmer and Annett Gröschner.
In recognition of its vast scope, the jury called the book “a virtuosic achievement in the presentation of archival research”.
The jury's assessment in detail reads as follows:
“While many recent histories of the Berlin Wall have analyzed its symbolic significance to East and West, Taking Stock of Power directs its investigation toward the structure of the wall itself. Arwed Messmer and Annett Gröschner’s painstakingly researched project consists of two hand-bound volumes, housed in a vertical open-ended slipcase, which together create a definitive account of the wall as it existed in 1966. The book features seven hundred individual panoramas, stitched together from over three thousand previously unseen amateur photographs discovered within Berlin’s Intermediate Military Archives, which together map out the entire circumference of the wall around West Berlin. Punctuated with quotes and stories recorded from the wall’s front lines, the book offers a virtuosic achievement in the presentation of archival research.”
