Alfred Ehrhardt
In 1938, Alfred Ehrhardt (1901-1984) embarked upon a two-month film and photo expedition through Iceland, visiting such now well-known landscape monuments as Dettifoss, Thingvellir, Geysir, and Langsjökull. Following his first photo series, Mudflats and Curonian Spit, it was only logical that his quest for "elementary manifestations of fundamental forces" would lead him to this untouched "primal landscape" shaped by glaciers and volcanoes, where he hoped to gain insights into Earth's origin. In this richly illustrated publication, Christiane Stahl and Inga Lára Baldvinsdóttir illuminate the background of the Iceland expeditions of German photographers and researchers during the twenties and thirties. In the process, they explore the typological approach to the landscape and the abstract, avant-garde visual vocabulary that set Ehrhardt apart from the other photographers of his time and provided new impulses to landscape photography in Iceland.
